Pope Francis established the diocese of Guasdualito on December 3, 2015 from cessions of territory from the dioceses of San Fernando de Apure and Barinas . It was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Mérida as a suffragan diocese. Pablo Modesto González Pérez SDB was appointed first diocesan bishop .
