history

Pope Paul VI established the diocese on May 16, 1972 with the Apostolic Constitution In vertice from cession of territory of the Diocese of Valencia en Venezuela and was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Caracas as a suffragan diocese.

On November 12, 1974, it became part of the ecclesiastical province of the Archdiocese of Valencia en Venezuela .
