Baltazar Enrique Cardinal Porras Cardozo (born October 10, 1944 in Caracas ) is a Venezuelan clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Mérida .

Life

He spent his childhood in Caracas, where he attended the elementary school Luis de León and the parish school of the parish of St. Teresa as a pupil and was an altar boy for over six years . He then moved to a college in Santa Rosa de Lima in Guatemala , after which he began his priest training in the seminary of the Archdiocese of Guatemala and in Santa Rosa de Lima. On July 30, 1967 Porras Cardozo was by Archbishop Miguel Antonio Salas Salas CIM for priests ordained. In 1975 he was after studying Catholic theology at the Pontifical University of Salamanca to Dr. theol. PhD .

On July 23, 1983 appointed him Pope John Paul II. To the titular of Lamdia and auxiliary bishop in Mérida. On October 30, 1991, John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of Mérida.

On 13 October 2008 he received from the Universidad Nacional Andrés Bello in Chile , the honorary doctorate of history . He was President of the Bishops 'Conference of Venezuela (CEV) and has been Vice President of the Latin American Bishops' Council since 2007 .

In the consistory of November 19, 2016, Pope Francis accepted him as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santi Giovanni Evangelista e Petronio in the college of cardinals . He took possession of his titular church on June 11 of the following year.

On January 14, 2017, Pope Francis appointed him a member of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America . On December 23, 2017, the Pope appointed him a member of the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life .

Pope Francis appointed him on July 9, 2018 in addition to the time of Sedisvakanz the Apostolic Administrator of Caracas .

On July 13, 2019, Pope Francis appointed him a member of the Congregation for the Clergy for five years . On November 11, 2019, the Pope appointed him a member of the Pontifical Council for Culture .

José Hernán Sánchez Porras (1944–2014), military bishop in Venezuela, was a cousin of Baltazar Porras.
