Frédéric Cardinal Etsou-Nzabi-Bamungwabi CICM (born December 3, 1930 in Mazalonga , Democratic Republic of the Congo , † January 6, 2007 in Leuven , Belgium ) was Archbishop of Kinshasa .

Life

Frédéric Etsou-Nzabi-Bamungwabi studied Catholic theology and philosophy at the seminary and at the Mindolo Ecumenical Center in Kitwe ( Zambia ) . During his student years he joined the Congregation of the Immaculate Heart of Mary . On July 13, 1958, he received the sacrament of ordination and was subsequently installed as a parish pastor in two parishes in Kinshasa. Afterwards, his superiors sent him to Paris and Brussels for further studies , where Frédéric Etsou-Nzabi-Bamungwabi received his doctorate in sociology .

In 1968 he became dean of a large parish in his home diocese and deputy provincial of his order. In 1976 he received episcopal ordination and was appointed titular archbishop of Menefessi and coadjutor archbishop for the archbishopric of Mbandaka- Bikoro, which he led for thirteen years before Pope John Paul II appointed him archbishop of Kinshasa in 1990.

The College of Cardinals belonged to Frédéric Etsou-Nzabi-Bamungwabi since June 28, 1991 as a cardinal priest with the titular church Santa Lucia a Piazza d'Armi .

He died on January 6, 2007 at the University Hospital in Leuven from complications from diabetes .
