Julián Cardinal Herranz Casado (born March 31, 1930 in Baena , Spain ) is a retired Curia Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Julián Herranz Casado completed his studies in medicine and Catholic theology with a doctorate in medicine and a doctorate in canon law . During his student days he joined Opus Dei . On August 7, 1955, he received the sacrament of ordination and was subsequently professor of canon law at the University of Navarre . In addition, he worked on catechetical and disciplinary matters for the Curia . During the Second Vatican Council he served as a study assistant in the Commission on Disciplinary Issues.

He then became Undersecretary of the Pontifical Commission for the Interpretation of the Codex Iuris Canonici . He also worked in legal research and as an author and co-editor of canonical books and magazines. The personal prelature Opus Dei sent him to Italy , Spain, Latin America , England , Ireland , France and Kenya as a pastor .

In 1984 Herranz Casado became secretary of the Pontifical Commission for the Interpretation of the Codex Iuris Canonici and advisor to the Congregation for Bishops . On December 15, 1990 appointed him Pope John Paul II. To Titular Archbishop of Vertara and donated to it on 6 January 1991, the episcopal ordination ; Co- consecrators were the Archbishops of the Curia Giovanni Battista Re , Official in the State Secretariat , and Justin Francis Rigali , Secretary of the Congregation for Bishops.

In 1994 he became president of the Pontifical Council for the Interpretation of Legal Texts. John Paul II accepted him on October 21, 2003 as a cardinal deacon with the titled deaconry Sant'Eugenio in the college of cardinals .

Herranz was a participant in the 2005 conclave , in which Benedict XVI. was chosen. This first confirmed him in office and then on February 15, 2007, he accepted his resignation due to reasons of age.

In spring 2012, Pope Benedict XVI entrusted him. with the leadership of a three-person cardinals commission with a special mandate to investigate the so-called Vatileaks affair. The commission was supposed to investigate cases of theft of confidential (papal) documents from the Vatican and presented its final report to the Pope in July 2012.

Cardinal Herranz did not take part in the 2013 conclave because he was over the age limit of 80 years.

On June 12, 2014, he was elevated to cardinal priest pro hac vice .
