Johann Friedrich Arndt

Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Arndt (born June 24, 1802 in Berlin ; † May 8, 1881 there ) was a German Protestant preacher .

Life

Arndt came from a simple family of craftsmen. Supported by his teachers and given a scholarship, Arndt was able to study theology in Berlin from 1820. Here the court preacher Gerhard Friedrich Strauss was his teacher.

Through his advocacy, Arndt got a job at Magdeburg Cathedral as an assistant preacher immediately after his studies in 1829 . In 1833 he moved to the Parochialkirche (Berlin) in Berlin as "Second Preacher", and seven years later he became "First Preacher". He held this office until his retirement in 1875. As one of the most important preachers of the 19th century, Arndt had a great influence at the royal court.

Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Arndt died on May 8, 1881 in Berlin at the age of 78.
