Taiohae ( Taiohai ) is the main town in the French community Nuku Hiva in French Polynesia , in the archipelago of the Marquesas . The place is on the edge of an old volcanic crater that has collapsed and partially filled with sea water, so that a large port is created, the Taioha'e Bay (Taiohae Bay, formerly: Port Anna Maria ). The place has about 1,600 inhabitants (2007: 1,900 inhabitants).

administration

Taoihae is also one of the three sub-communities of the Nuku Hiva community. It occupies the southwestern part of the island of Nuku Hiva . It also includes the uninhabited islands of Motu Iti , Eiao , Hatutu and Motu One to the northwest of Nuku Hiva .

geography

The place is on the south coast of the island of Nuku Hiva, framed by the forested mountains of the old volcanic crater. A single connecting road leads north to Nuku Hiva Airport (Route de l'Aéroport). After the crater's ridge, there is a junction to the other towns on the island, to Taipivai and Ho'oumi on Comptroller Bay in the northeast and Hatiheu with Anaho and Aakapa on the north coast. The administrative center of the Marquesas has a modern infrastructure with administrative buildings, a gendarmerie station , post office, hospital , schools , banks and some smaller shopping centers.

There are ferry connections to Aranui (Christchurch) New Zealand . Nuku Hiva Airport in the northwest of the island is served by local Polynesian airlines. The mountains around Taiohae Bay rise directly to heights between 450 m and 864 m ( Mont Muake ).

Religion & culture

The modern Church of Notre Dame in Taiohae is the seat of the Catholic diocese Taiohae o Tefenuaenata . The cathedral is made of different colored stones from six Marquesas Islands. The sculptures inside the church show the high level of carving art in the Marquesas. At the eastern edge of the village, traditional huts and ceremonial platforms with tikis were recreated by local artists for the Marquesas Festival in 1999.
