Uturoa is one of three parishes on the island of Raiatea , which is one of the Society Islands in French Polynesia . It is the capital of the Îles sous le Vent district .

geography

Uturoa is located on the northern tip of the island, 5.8 kilometers south of the island of Tahaa and has 4210 inhabitants (2009) on an area of ​​16 km². The height ranges from sea level to 479 m above sea level. M. Tahaa and Raiatea are surrounded by the same coral reef .

history

There was not even a village where Uturoa is today when the missionary John Williams (1796–1839) established a mission station there around 1820.

Philippe Brotherson was Mayor of Uturoa from 1972 to 2008. He died on June 5, 2008 at the age of 79.

Culture and sights

The port of Uturoa is a stop for the international regatta of Polynesian pirogues Hawaiki nui va'a , which takes place annually.

The Anuanua Gallery exhibits artwork by local artists and sells Polynesian handicrafts.

economy

The main occupation is agriculture, there are several restaurants in Uturoa.

The Raiatea Airport is located in Uturoa, there is a ferry service to Tahaa, a port where cruise ships create ( Gare Maritime ) and a marina .
