Aimata Vahine o Punuatera itua (born February 28, 1813 in Pare, † September 17, 1877 in Papeete ) was Queen Pomaré IV of Tahiti and Moorea from January 11, 1827 to September 17, 1877 .

Origin and family

She was the daughter of King Tunuieaite atua Pomaré II and his 2nd wife Terito i te rai. In December 1827 she married Teriinohorai Tapoa II, the king of Bora Bora , to whom she was promised as a child. Her second marriage was on December 3, 1832 in Pare and married her cousin Ariifaaite Tenania a Hiro (born January 10, 1820 Huahine ; † February 12, 1873 Papeete), son of Perera a Hiro and Teihotu Taavea vahine, a daughter of Tamatoa III.

history

The young Aimata took over as “ari'i rahi” on January 11, 1827, succeeding her deceased brother Pomaré III. and soon got into a European power struggle for the archipelago .

When, on April 6, 1768, Louis Antoine de Bougainville , a French navigator on a circumnavigation of the world near Hitiaa, the eastern side of Tahiti, was ashore until April 15 and took possession of the island for the French king, France's interest in this archipelago became awakened.

After two French missionaries from the Polynesian neighboring islands landed on Tahiti in 1836 , the archipelago got caught up in a European power struggle. Queen Pomaré IV was removed from office on December 12, 1836 by the British missionary and consul George Pritchard (1796-1883). In a letter to Queen Victoria , Aimata asked for British protection, whereupon France protested and sent a frigate. In 1841 the "To'ohitu", the "High Council" of Tahiti, including Tati, Opuhara's brother from Papara, decided for a French protectorate, which Queen Aimata ultimately also joined. On September 9, 1842, the French Rear Admiral Dupetit-Thouars hoisted the flag of the Protectorate. The British consul Pritchard returned to Tahiti on February 25, 1843, whereupon more French troops landed and Aimata's British administration ended. After her return from exile on Moorea, Raiatea and Bora Bora, Queen Pomaré IV ruled under French protectorate from 1847 to September 17, 1877.
