The individual archery competition is divided into two sections. The first part is the placement round, which forms the basis for the subsequent knockout round . Each shooter has a total of 72 arrows and shoots at the target. All points are added together and the ranking list is created using this. Records can also be set in this part of the competition and before the 2020 Olympic Games the following records are current:
The second part is the elimination round, which is carried out in the knockout system. Four groups are formed. The pairings of the archers result from the previous placement round, the first placed against the archer in 64th place, the second placed against the archer in 63rd place and so on. Each shooter shoots a series of three arrows. The winner of the series receives two points; if there is a tie, one point is awarded. A maximum of five series are shot. The shooter who scores six points first moves on to the next round. If there is still a tie after five series, a decision shot is fired that decides on victory or defeat.
