Summer Olympics 2020 / Athletics / Qualification
This article describes the qualification for the athletics competitions of the Olympic Games in 2020 in Tokyo . Qualification ends on June 29, 2021.
Qualification criteria
A maximum of 3 athletes from each nation are allowed to compete, provided that they have reached the Olympic standard during the qualification period. In the relay competitions, each nation may only have one relay per competition. Regardless of qualifying times, each nation is allowed to send one athlete per gender. This ensures that each country can provide at least two athletes at the games.
The qualification system for the 2020 Games is different compared to the previous ones. While the qualification was based on norms in the previous games, this time the qualification is primarily via the world rankings. The IAAF continued to announce standards, but these are only intended for the qualification of athletes with exceptional performance who could not qualify via the world rankings. The number of athletes per competition is limited. The number of quota places varies from 24 athletes for the all-around competitions to 80 athletes for the marathons.
The IAAF world rankings are based on an average of the five best results achieved by each athlete during the qualifying period. The results are weighted differently depending on the importance of the event.
The qualification period for the marathon and the 50 km race is from January 1, 2019 to April 5, 2020 and from December 1, 2020 to May 31, 2021. The qualification period for the 10,000 meter race and the competition in walking over 20 km and all-round competitions is from January 1, 2019 to April 5, 2020 and from December 1, 2020 to June 29, 2021. Qualification for the remaining competitions will take place from May 1, 2019 to April 5, 2020 and from December 1, 2020 to June 29, 2021. The last continental championships can be counted in the ranking even if this does not take place during the qualification period. On April 6, 2020, World Athletics announced that the qualifying period for the games would be suspended until November 30, 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic .
There are 16 quota places for the relays per competition. The eight best seasons of the 2019 World Championships in Doha will receive a quota place. The remaining quota places will be awarded according to the world ranking on June 29, 2020.
If more than three athletes from one country qualify for a competition, the decision of which of these athletes will use the three starting places lies with the respective National Olympic Committee .
Athletes must be born before January 1st, 2005 to participate. Athletes born in 2003 or 2004 are not allowed to participate in any of the following competitions: discus, hammer and javelin throw, shot put, 10,000 meters, marathon, heptathlon and decathlon as well as 20 and 50 km walking. Athletes born in 2001 and 2002 are also excluded from the marathon and 50 km walk.
