Abderrahman Samba (born September 5, 1995 in Mauritania ) is a Qatari hurdler from Mauritania who has specialized in the 400 meter hurdles and has been authorized to compete internationally for Qatar since 2016.

Athletic career

Abderrahman Samba first appeared at international meetings in 2016, setting top performances of 21.17 s over 200 and 46.04 s over 400 meters. He also made his first appearance in the IAAF Diamond League in Doha as part of a Qatari 4 x 400 meter relay . In 2017 he only competed in the 400-meter hurdles and, after improving his personal best to 48.31 s in his second race and meanwhile a world best for the year, got his first individual starting position in the IAAF Diamond League. In Doha he prevailed against the Olympic champion of the previous year Kerron Clement and the world champion of 2015 Nicholas Bett and won in 48.44 s. He also qualified for the World Championships in London , where he reached the finals and finished seventh in 49.74 s after he got stuck in a promising position at the last hurdle and fell behind the field.

In 2018 he took part in the Asian Indoor Championships in Tehran , where he won the gold medals with the Qatari 4 x 400 meter relay. In the open air he first improved his best performance over 400 meters to 45.47 s and later in the hurdles to 47.48 s, which put him in 14th place on the all-time best list and ran the fastest time in eight years. At the Meeting de Paris on June 30, 2018, he ran the 400 meter hurdles in 46.98 s, becoming the second person after world record holder Kevin Young to break the 47-second mark. At the end of August he took part in the Asian Games in Jakarta for the first time and won there in the hurdles with a new player record of 47.66 seconds ahead of the Indian Ayyasamy Dharun . On the final day of the games he also won gold with the Qatari relay with a new Asian record of 3: 00.56 min, ahead of India and Japan. In 2019 he won the Asian Championships in Doha with a new championship record of 47.51 s and thus received a bye for the World Championships there in October. He also won the bronze medal behind the teams from Japan and China in 3: 03.95 min. At the World Championships, he reached the final , in which he won the bronze medal in 48.03 s behind the Norwegian Karsten Warholm and Rai Benjamin from the United States.
