Oliver Helander (born January 1, 1997 in Raseborg ) is a Finnish athlete who specializes in throwing a javelin .

Athletic career

Oliver Helander comes from Raseborg in southern Finland, where he competes for the local athletics club, IF Raseborg. His father is the former handball player and record player in the Finnish league, Jan Helander . Like his father, Helander played handball for a long time, including for Finland's U18 team. While he mainly trains the javelin in the summer, he plays handball in the winter months.

In 2011 he first competed in a javelin throw. Two years later he competed at the U18 World Championships in Donetsk. He moved into the final, in which he finished fourth with 75.36 m. In 2014 he took second place with the spear at the Finnish U18 championships and was also third in the high jump and fifth with the discus. In 2015 he competed at the U20 European Championships in Eskilstuna. In the final he finished seventh with 74.81 m. In 2016 he competed for the first time in the Finnish Adult Championships, where he finished tenth.

In 2017 Helander started at the U20 European Championships in Bydgoszcz. In the final he reached 74.46 m, with which he finished seventh. In July 2018, Helander set his best performance of 88.02 m in a competition in his home country. In the same month he became Finnish champion. A month later he came in the qualification of the European Championships in Berlin only on 76.64 m and was eliminated in the qualification. At the 2019 World Championships in Doha, he finished 19th with 80.36 m.
