This article describes how to qualify for the surfing competitions at the 2020 Summer Olympics . There are a total of 40 quota places, 20 for each gender. Each nation may have a maximum of two athletes per gender. The Japanese delegation is entitled to one quota place per competition as the host nation.
Distribution of quota places
- Host nation: Japan as the host nation receives one quota place per gender. Should a Japanese athlete qualify directly via one of the qualifying competitions, the quota place will be awarded to the next best athlete in the World Surfin Games 2020.
- World Surf League 2019 : The 10 best placed men and the 8 best placed women receive a quota place.
- ISA World Surfing Games 2019: Best participant per continent, with the exception of America.
- Pan American Games 2019 : The winner of each gender received a quota place
- ISA World Surfing Games 2020: The 4 best men and 6 best women get quota places. Should more than the maximum number of athletes from a nation qualify, the ISA World Surfing Games 2020 have priority and all places awarded from 2019 onwards will be awarded to the next best athlete. Each nation is allowed to have a maximum of four athletes (two of each gender) in the Olympic Games. A reallocation of quota places will take place, if necessary, on June 26, 2020.

Remarks
1) This athlete is qualified for the 2020 Olympic Games, unless two other athletes from the same nation can qualify via the ISA World Surfing Games 2020.
2) Since Japan was able to secure a quota place via the World Surfing Games 2019, this quota place was deleted.
