For the 2020 Olympic hockey tournaments, 12 teams were able to qualify for both men and women. Each team may have a maximum of 16 players.

Asian Games 2018

The Asian representative was determined during the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta , Indonesia . The Japanese national team won the tournament, since they are already qualified as the host nation, there were seven instead of six playoff games.

Pan American Games 2019

At the Pan American Games 2019 in Peru, a quota place was awarded to Argentina as the winner of this tournament.

African qualifying tournament

The quota place due to the African association was played in a qualification tournament. South Africa was able to prevail among the six teams and qualified for the games.

At the European Championship 2019 in Antwerp , 8 nations played for a quota place, which is due to the winner of the tournament. The Belgian national team won the tournament in their own country and is therefore qualified for Tokyo.

Oceania Cup 2019

Only Australia and New Zealand took part in the Oceania Cup . They played against each other three times for the quota place for Oceania. Australia secured the quota position with two wins and one draw.
