history

The women's first appearance was also their most successful: they won gold at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow . Zimbabwe had only gained independence on April 18, 1980, three months before the Games, the Olympic boycott against the country had just been lifted and, due to the absence of the western states, Zimbabwe had become one of the six participants in the first women's Olympic hockey tournament. The team put together at short notice by player- coach Anthea Stewart did not lose a game. It beat Poland 4: 0, the Soviet Union 2: 0 and Austria 4: 1, and played against Czechoslovakia 2: 2, against India 1: 1.

Then the team disintegrated and a women's team from Zimbabwe could neither qualify for the Olympic Games nor for World Championships.
