World Championship 2019

In addition to the quota place that Japan received as the host nation, the first quota place was awarded to Denmark as world champion at the handball world championship 2019 . The next six teams that do not achieve a quota place on the continental championships are eligible to participate in the Olympic qualifying tournaments that will take place in April 2020. Spain as European champions and Egypt as Africa champions qualified directly for the Olympic Games.

Pan American Games 2019

At the Pan American Games 2019 in Peru, a quota place was awarded to Argentina as the winner of this tournament. Chile as runner-up was given a starting place for the additional qualifying tournaments. The following teams took part in this tournament:

Asia

The quota place due to the Asian association AHF was played in a qualifying tournament at the end of October 2019. Bahrain is qualified as a winner for the Olympic Games. The second-placed South Korea received a starting place for the additional qualifying tournaments. The following teams took part in this tournament:

Europe

At the European Handball Championship 2020 , 24 nations played for a quota place, which Spain got as the winner of the tournament. In addition to the teams already qualified at the World Cup, Slovenia and Portugal received a starting place for the additional qualifying tournaments.

Africa Cup of Nations 2020

The quota place due to the African association CAHB was played at the African Championship in January 2020. Egypt is qualified as a winner for the Olympic Games. Tunisia as second and Algeria as third received a starting place for the additional qualifying tournaments. The following teams took part in this tournament:

International qualifying tournaments

In addition to the continental championships and the world championship, a total of six further quota places will be awarded in three qualifying tournaments. The tournaments were scheduled to take place April 17-19 , 2020, but have been postponed to March 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic . The six best teams of the 2019 World Cup that have not yet won a quota place are qualified for these tournaments (see above ). An additional six starting places were awarded at the continental championships:

The total of 12 teams will compete in three groups of four, of which the best two teams will qualify for the Olympic Games.
