The qualification for the fencing competitions at the Summer Olympics in 2020 is primarily about the FIE was ranked in at the closing 4 April 2020. Furthermore, there is the possibility of quota places four continental qualification tournaments to win. The continental qualifiers were originally scheduled to take place between April 15 and 19, 2020. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic , these have been postponed. The athletes who have already qualified via the ranking will keep their quota places.

Eight teams qualify for each team competition. Each team consists of 3 fencers. In addition to the four best-placed teams, the next best team on a continent (Africa, America, Europe and Asia-Oceania) qualify if it is placed in the top 16. If no teams from a continent are placed in the top 16, the quota place will be awarded to the top-ranking nation that has not yet qualified.

In the case of individual competitions, the 3 fencers of each team from the team competitions are automatically qualified. In addition, six more places will be allocated. The two best fencers from Europe and Asia-Oceania who have not yet qualified will receive a quota place. This also applies to the best fencer from Africa and America who has not yet been qualified. Four more places (one per continent) are awarded through continental tournaments. Only nations from which no athlete in the respective discipline has been able to qualify can take part in these tournaments.

The Japanese delegation also receives at least 8 quota places as hosts. Unoccupied quota places will be given to other nations by wildcard.
