history

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Nations near Leipzig in 1913, simple memorial stones were created in numerous villages in the near and far surrounding areas, which often only bear the year of the decisive battle of the Wars of Liberation . Such a stone is also located on the main street in the center of Großweißandt, which later merged with other villages to form Weißandt-Gölzau . The porphyry stone stands north of the church , manor house and castle .

After the Second World War , the memorial stone, which weighed tons, disappeared in a night and fog action by burying it on the spot. Instead, a memorial stone for Ernst Thälmann was erected there. But when the town center was renovated in the 1990s, people remembered the stone and were able to rediscover it. It was lifted with a heavy-duty crane and brought back to its old place.

inscription

Memorial stones for the Battle of Nations are part of the border area of war memorials . It is true that they are also intended to commemorate the fallen, but unlike memorials for the wars of the 1860s and 1870s, they do not want to commemorate specific people, but above all the political significance of the event. Therefore the stone in Großweißandt bears the simple inscription 18. X 1813.1913 and an iron cross . Due to their simple design, the memorial stones are sometimes even denied the designation as memorials.
