Laura Ikauniece (temporarily Laura Ikauniece-Admidiņa ; born May 31, 1992 in Ventspils ) is a Latvian athlete who specializes in heptathlon .

Athletic career

Ikauniece first attracted international attention when she won the silver medal behind Katarina Johnson-Thompson at the 2009 World Youth Championships . She also came third in the high jump and fourth in the long jump at the 2009 European Summer Youth Olympic Festival . At the Junior World Championships 2010 she reached sixth place and at the Junior European Championships 2011 she won bronze behind Dafne Schippers and Sara Gambetta .

In 2012 she started in the active class and immediately won the bronze medal at the 2012 European Championships in Helsinki with 6335 points behind Antoinette Nana Djimou Ida and Ljudmyla Jossypenko . After Jossypenko was disqualified for doping , she was subsequently awarded the silver rank. At the Olympic Games in London she achieved a new Latvian national record with 6414 points and landed in ninth place, which was later corrected to eighth place by the cancellation of Jossypenko's result. In 2013 she took part in the European Indoor Championships in Gothenburg , where she was tenth. At the Summer Universiade in Kazan , she won the silver medal with 6321 points behind Tatiana Chernova . Chernova was later stripped of her medal and attributed to Ikauniece. In Moscow she was eleventh at the World Championships .

In August 2014 Ikauniece came in sixth place with 6310 points at the European Championships in Zurich. At the beginning of July 2015, she improved her national record to 6470 points in the Second League of the European Cup of all- rounders. At the end of August, she rose again at the 2015 World Championships in Beijing to 6516 points, winning the bronze medal behind Jessica Ennis-Hill and Brianne Theisen-Eaton . At the end of the season she won the IAAF World Combined Events Challenge with 19,422 points .

In 2016 the World Cup third from Beijing started the season at the all-around meeting in Götzis on 28/29. May 2016. There she achieved three new personal bests and thus improved her own national record by 106 points to 6622 points and took second place behind the winner and vice world champion Brianne Theisen-Eaton . In preparation for the Olympic Games, she took part in the European Championships in Amsterdam in the 100-meter hurdles, but was eliminated in qualifying there. At the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , she finished fourth with 6617 points. At the Hypomeeting 2017 she improved her own record by more than 100 points and, with her 6815 points, ranks 17th on the all-time best list (as of May 2017)

After an injury during the 2017 World Championships in London , Ikauniece had to take a year off and missed almost the entire 2018 season. In 2019 she took part in the European Indoor Championships in Glasgow , where she finished fifth in the indoor pentathlon with a new Latvian record of 4702 points.

In 2009 Ikauniece became the Latvian champion in the 200-meter run and in 2010 in the 100-meter hurdles and high jump, while in 2013 she won the championship in the 100-meter run. In the hall she secured the championship titles in the 60-meter hurdles in 2010, 2014 and 2019, and in 2014 also in the 60-meter run and in 2019 in the high jump.

Personal

Laura Ikauniece was born into a sporty family. Her mother Vineta Ikauniece was a sprinter, set the Latvian records over 100 m, 200 m and 400 m and narrowly missed participation in the Olympic Games in the 1980s, and her father Aivars Ikaunieks was a Latvian champion and has the fourth-best Latvian time 110 m hurdles.

In July 2014 Laura Ikauniece married the physiotherapist Rolands Admidiņš and took the name Ikauniece-Admidiņa . In mid-January 2019 she announced that she would be going separate ways with her husband in the future and has since started again under her maiden name Ikauniece .
