Ernest John Obiena (born November 17, 1995 in Manila ) is a Filipino pole vaulter .

Athletic career

Ernest Obiena gained his first international experience at the Southeast Asian Games 2015 in Singapore , where he won the silver medal behind Porranot Purahong from Thailand with a jump of 5.25 m . In 2016 he took part in the Asian Indoor Championships in Doha , where he finished fourth with 5.40 m. In the following year he won the bronze medal at the Asian Championships in Bhubaneswar with 5.50 m behind the Chinese Ding Bangchao and Masaki Ejima from Japan. In 2018 he took part in the Asian Games in Jakarta for the first time , where he finished seventh with 5.30 m. The following year he surprisingly won with a new championship and national record at the Asian Championships in Doha and then also at the Summer Universiade in Naples with 5.76 m. He also took part in the World Championships in Doha and was eliminated there with 5.60 m in qualification . At the beginning of December he won the Southeast Asian Games in Capas with a new player record of 5.45 m.
