Daichi Sawano ( Japanese 澤 野 大地 Sawano Daichi ; born September 16, 1980 in Osaka ) is a Japanese pole vaulter .
Athletic career
Daichi Sawano gained his first international experience in 2002 at the Asian Championships in Colombo , where he won the gold medal with a jump of 5.40 m. The following year he took part in the World Championships in Paris and reached the finals there, but could no longer compete there. In 2004 he failed at the World Indoor Championships in Budapest with 5.55 m in qualification. He also qualified for the Olympic Games in Athens , where he finished 13th with 5.55 m in the final . The following year he was eighth at the World Championships in Helsinki with a height of 5.50 m. He also won again at the Asian Championships in Incheon, South Korea, with 5.40 m. In 2006 he won the Asian Indoor Championships in Pattaya with skipped 5.60 m and retired from the World Indoor Championships in Moscow with 5.65 m in qualification. In December he finally won the Asian Games in Doha with a height of 5.60 m .
In 2007 he took part in the home world championships in Osaka , where he did not succeed in qualifying. The following year he won again at the Asian Indoor Championships in Doha with 5.45 m and retired from the World Indoor Championships in Valencia with 5.65 m in qualification. In the summer he again took part in the Olympic Games in Beijing and this time retired with 5.55 m in qualification . At the World Championships in Berlin he was tenth with a skipped 5.50 m in the final and at the Asian Championships in Guangzhou he won the bronze medal behind the two Chinese Liu Feiliang and Yang Quan with 5.45 m . Two years later he won with 5.50 m at the Asian Championships in Kobe and reached the final at the World Championships in Daegu , in which he was 14th with 5.65 m. 2013 he again took part in the World Championships in Moscow and retired there with 5.40 m in the qualification. At the Asian Games in Incheon he won the silver medal behind the Chinese Xue Changrui with 5.55 m . In 2016 he took part in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro for the third time and was seventh in the final with a height of 5.5 m . In 2019 he was eliminated from the qualification at the World Championships in Doha with 5.45 m .
In 2000, 2003 and 2004, from 2006 to 2009 as well as 2011 and 2016, Sawano became the Japanese champion in the pole vault.
