Abdessalem Ayouni gained his first experience at international championships in 2011 at the World Youth Championships near Lille , where he retired in the 800-meter run with 1: 53.81 min in the first round and also with the Tunisian sprint relay (1000 meters) with 1:59 , 18 min did not reach the final. The following year he took part in the 1500 meter run at the Junior World Championships in Barcelona , but was eliminated there with 3: 48.67 minutes in the lead. At the World Cross Country Championships 2013 in Bydgoszcz he came in 68th place in the U20 classification after 23:59 minutes and at the Francophonie Games in Nice he finished eighth over 800 meters in 1: 50.59 minutes. In 2014 he finished sixth at the U23 Mediterranean Championships in Aubagne over 1500 meters in 3: 55.03 min and finished seventh at the African Championships in Marrakech in 3: 44.67 min. In 2015 he took part in the Africa Games in Brazzaville for the first time and finished sixth there in 3: 47.64 minutes.
In 2016 he won the U23 Mediterranean Championships in Tunis in 1: 47.79 min over 800 meters, in 4: 09.39 min also over 1500 meters and in 3: 13.44 min with the Tunisian 4 x 400 meters -Season. The following year he qualified over 800 meters for the World Championships in London and was eliminated there with 1: 47.39 min in the semifinals . Before that, he won the bronze medal at the Arab Championships in Radès in 1: 47.59 minutes behind Moroccan Oussama Nabil and Mohamed Belbachir from Algeria. In 2018 he won the silver medal over 1500 meters behind Moroccan Brahim Kaazouzi at the Mediterranean Games in Tarragona in 3: 37.35 minutes and was eliminated in the preliminary round over 800 meters with 1: 49.63 minutes. He then took part in the African Championships in Asaba over 1500 meters , but did not make it to the final there. The following year he won the silver medal over 800 meters behind his compatriot Riadh Chninni at the Arab Championships in Cairo in 1: 51.31 minutes and was sixth over 1500 meters in 3: 48.39 minutes. He then took part again in the Africa Games in Rabat and won there with a new game and national record of 1: 45.17 minutes over 800 meters. He qualified again for the World Championships in Doha , where he was eliminated with 1: 45.80 min in the semifinals . He then finished sixth at the World Military Games in Wuhan in 1: 51.88 minutes.
