Nicola McDermott (born December 28, 1996 in North Gosford ) is an Australian high jumper .

Athletic career

Nicola McDermott gained her first international experience at the 2014 Junior World Championships in Eugene , where she was eliminated from the qualification with 1.79 m. The following year she took part in the Summer Universiade in Gwangju and came fourth with a jump of 1.80 m. In 2017 she qualified for the World Championships in London , where she was eliminated without a valid attempt in qualification . Two weeks later she reached seventh place with 1.88 m at the Student World Games in Taipei . In 2018 she took part in the Commonwealth Games in her native Gold Coast for the first time and won the bronze medal behind Levern Spencer from St. Lucia and the British Morgan Lake with a jump of 1.91 m . In September she was fifth at the Continental Cup in Ostrava with 1.87 m.

In 2019, McDermott became the Australian high jump champion. She is studying biochemistry at Sydney University .
