Soufiane el-Bakkali ( Arabic سفيان البقالي, DMG Sufyān al-Baqqālī ; * January 7, 1996 in Fès ) is a Moroccan athlete who specializes in obstacle course . At the 2017 World Championships in London, he was runner-up in the 3000 meter obstacle course.

Athletic career

Soufiane el-Bakkali has competed in medium, long-distance and obstacle runs since 2012. From 2013 he competed over 3000 m in the obstacle course. Over this distance he managed to qualify for the U20 World Championships in Eugene. There he finished in a time of 8: 34.98 min. fourth place in the final. A month later he also competed in the adult division at the African Championships in Marrakech in his home country. There, too, he started over 3000 m obstacle and ran into tenth place in the final.

In 2015, at a meeting in France, he set his best time over 1500 m, which meant fifth place there. Before that, he competed at the World Cross Country Championships in Guiyang in March . In the junior race over 8 km, he took 18th place there. In spring 2016, El Bakkali set his personal best over 3000 m and in the half marathon. In the 3000 meter obstacle course, he qualified for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. As second in his semi-final he moved into the final, in which he achieved a season best of 8: 14.35 min. took fourth place.

In February 2017 he set the 5000 m at an indoor meeting in Birmingham with a time of 13: 10.60 min. the Moroccan national record. In August he first took part in continental title fights in the adult division at the World Championships in London. He qualified for the finals as the first of his semi-final run. There he had to be in 8:14; 49 min. only defeat the Kenyan Conseslus Kipruto and celebrated his greatest sporting success to date by winning the silver medal. In June 2018, El Bakkali won the Mediterranean Games in Tarragona, Spain . In July he set his personal best in the obstacle course of 7: 58.15 minutes. at a meeting in Monaco. In August he took part in the African Championships in Asaba, Nigeria. There he had to give up again, as in the World Championships, only Kipruto.

In 2019, el-Bakkali also started at the Africa Games in Rabat in his home country. There he won bronze in the obstacle course. In October he then took part in the World Championships in Doha. He qualified for the finals as second in his semi-final run. In the finals, he won his second World Cup medal in third place in the season best.
