The 2020 men's Olympic football tournament will take place from July 22nd to August 7th, 2021 with 16 teams. With the exception of three players per team, only players born after or on January 1, 1997 may participate.

qualification

In addition to hosts Japan, 15 other teams qualify through continental competitions. In Africa (three teams), Asia (three teams) and Oceania (one team) qualification took place via the continental U23 championships, in Europe (three teams) via the U21 European championships . Separate qualifying tournaments will be held in South America (two teams) and North / Central America (two teams).

The 16 teams contest the preliminary round in four groups of four teams each. The first and second placed reach the quarter-finals, the four winning teams of which advance to the semi-finals. The two winners of the semi-finals advance to the final, while the two losers play off for third place. If a game ends in a tie in the knockout round, it will be extended by 15 minutes twice. If no decision has been made yet, the penalty shoot-out decides.
