A four-round qualification tournament, through which two other Asian teams as well as hosts Japan qualify for the Olympic Games, will qualify for the women's tournament at the 2020 Summer Olympics for the teams from the AFC area . For the first time the national soccer team of the women of Macau was supposed to participate, but was then withdrawn. Due to the final round scheduled for the beginning of March 2020, a. Australia, China and South Korea will not participate in the Algarve Cup or other tournaments held in March as in previous years .

mode

Of the 25 teams entered, the five strongest teams Australia , the People's Republic of China , North and South Korea and Thailand qualified directly for the third round. Uzbekistan and Vietnam did not have to intervene until the second round. The other teams had to start in the first round. After the draw, the hosts were determined.

First round

The group winners and runners-up as well as the two best thirds qualified for the second round.

All games were played at Hisor Central Stadium in Hisor , Tajikistan .

Group C

All games were initially supposed to take place in Palestine, but were then moved to neutral Qatar as the Iranian team was not allowed to enter Palestine. The games were then played in the Saoud bin Abdulrahman Stadium in al-Wakra .

All games took place in the Jeju World Cup Stadium in Seogwipo . The team from North Korea drawn into the group was withdrawn for unknown reasons prior to the start of the tournament.

Group B

All games should initially take place in Wuhan . On January 22, 2020, the AFC relocated them to Nanjing because of the COVID-19 pandemic that broke out in Wuhan . On January 26th the games were moved to Australia. Due to quarantine measures against the Chinese team, the original schedule was changed several times and was not finalized until February 5th. All games took place at Campbelltown Stadium in the Sydney suburb of Leumeah .

Fourth round

In this round, the group winners of the third round play the tickets for the Olympic football tournament against the runners-up of the respective other group in a return game. The games were originally supposed to take place in parallel. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic , the games between South Korea and the People's Republic of China were rescheduled to April, then to June and, after the Olympic Games were also postponed, to February 2021.
