Haunted Hill - The return to the house of horrors is a American horror film from the year 2007 . The direct-to-video production is the sequel to the film Haunted Hill from the year 1999 . Ariel Wolfe is the editor of a fashion magazine for which she works with her boyfriend Paul.

Her sister Sara is one of the two survivors of a massacre in the former sanatorium "Haunted Hill" in 1999. She still holds on to the fact that ghosts committed the gruesome murders, but no one believes her. It is only when she appears to have committed suicide under mysterious circumstances that Ariel decides to find out who or what is responsible for her sister's death.

The diary of a certain Dr. Richard Benjamin Vannacutt, which Sara had sent her, refers to the former sanatorium "Hillhouse" and its gruesome past. But the diary is Ariel's undoing: She and her friend Paul are kidnapped by the unscrupulous art thief Desmond Niles and his henchmen Rick, Harue, Norris and Sam and taken to the sanatorium. Desmond apparently knows a lot about Ariel's sister and Hillhouse. Ariel is supposed to help him find a precious artifact , a figurine of the demon Baphomet , that Desmond wants to sell at a high price. The valuable piece is said to be hidden somewhere in Hillhouse. However, Paul is supposed to wait outside under Sam's care.

In Hillhouse, Ariel and her kidnappers meet Dr. Richard Hammer and his assistants Kyle and Michelle. Richard is also looking for the Baphomet figure. He hopes for fame and prestige by finding it. However, he and Desmond have been enemies for a long time and the first fights are exchanged. Michelle turns out to be a traitor: She is Desmond's new girlfriend and had Dr. Hammer was only accompanied to get information about the house and the possible whereabouts of the statuette.

During the dispute, loud machine noises can be heard and the startled Ariel explains that the locking mechanism has been activated. Desmond's henchmen Norris, Harue and Rick bring the machine to a stop. In the basement, the group split up and Desmond's first henchman, Rick, is killed when a ghost grabs him in the stomach through a stone wall and turns his insides outside. Harue is next. She is led by Dr. Vannacutt is surprised, who cuts the skin off her face with a scalpel. In the meantime, Ariel is getting the first visions from the past that show her the indescribable way in which Dr. Vannacutt acted out his perversions on the patients of the former sanatorium. When she and Desmond try to establish contact with the missing henchmen in the basement a little later, Ariel is dragged into one of the cells, where a ghost shows her further images from the past via visions. When she comes to, she is in a straitjacket.

Meanwhile, Kyle and Norris have returned to the lobby. There Norris is literally torn to pieces by ghosts in front of Kyle by means of tightly rolled up sofa covers. Richard, Ariel, Desmond and Michelle rush into the hall and try to calm Kyle down. Meanwhile, Paul and Sam receive a call to come to the house immediately. When the two arrive, Desmond freaks out because it was obviously not him who called. At the same moment the house lock is activated and the group is stuck. In the following argument, Paul's minder sneaks away and is surprised and brutally killed in the basement. The group can hear his dying screams on their cell phones. In the panic that ensues, Kyle, Richard, and Ariel can overwhelm Desmond and Michelle. Richard has a plan of the house that will help access the crematorium . The Baphomet statuette is apparently hidden there. On the way, Desmond and Michelle escape, while Kyle drowns in a pool of water. There Ariel receives visions from patients who are thrown by Vannacutt into the ice-cold water and drown there. Desmond and Michelle get lost and when Michelle begins to believe in the ghosts too, Desmond freaks out, accuses her of treason and threatens her with his weapon. Michelle escapes, but is met by Dr. Vannacutt killed with the help of a refrigerator.

Meanwhile, Richard, Paul, and Ariel find a room with access to a sewer. There Ariel receives another vision of the patient from the cell, who shows her the way to the crematorium. In a secret room made of organic, tissue-like material ("the heart of the institution") behind one of the mortuary ovens, the three finally discover the Baphomet statuette. Ariel shoots the idol, but it is not damaged. So she decides to remove the statuette from the house via the sewage system. On the way back, the group is surprised by Desmond who wants to appropriate the statuette. Suddenly, other charred ghosts intervene in what is happening, locking Desmond in one of the mortuary ovens and burning him alive. Paul is separated from Ariel and Richard. The latter run back into the room with the waste water discharge. Suddenly Richard attacks Ariel and tries to strangle her. He's apparently obsessed with Baphomet. Ariel is able to fight back and free, but is met by Dr. Vannacutt pressed. When Richard regains his senses and intervenes, he is killed by Vannacutt. Ariel seizes the moment and throws the statuette into the sewer chute. Then all the ghosts attack their former sanatorium manager and disappear with him. Ariel runs into the entrance hall, where she meets Paul again. Both flee Hillhouse.

After the end credits of the film, the discovery of the Baphomet statue by lovers on the beach suggests a sequel.
