Proximity - Outside the Law ( Proximity ) is an American thriller from Scott Ziehl from the year 2001 .

William Conroy is wealthy, married and has one son. The successful lawyer teaches as a law professor at a university. There he is also investigating an affair with one of his students. One evening Conroy goes on a momentous jaunt with his lover: Because of too much alcohol consumption, there is a traffic accident in which his lover is killed. He is sentenced to six months in prison for this.
The prison where Conroy is being held has reported 14 deaths in the past two years. Attacks are carried out on Conroy, whereupon he flees. He comes across a conspiracy. The prisoners were murdered on behalf of the families of their victims.
Conroy steals a videotape that could expose prison officials. He is being followed by the prison director and his men, and there is a shooting in a subway station and in the shopping center nearby. The prison director and his accomplices are arrested.

Reviews
Ryan Cracknell wrote in the Apollo Movie Guide that the film challenges viewers' perceptions of fairness. It shows that not all bad guys are really bad. The film is "well constructed". Cracknell described him as a "low-budget sister" of Auf der Flucht , there are some clichés and poorly structured dialogues.
The lexicon of international films wrote that the film was an “average action film about the overly superficially dealt with subjects of justice, vengeance and justice”.
