The Unicup is a hockey - tournament that every year in Aachen from the University Sports Center of RWTH Aachen University and the student councils Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Medicine at the RWTH Aachen in the Tivoli ice rink is organized. The game is played for the ThyssenKrupp Trophy, which is sponsored by ThyssenKrupp as a challenge cup .

The Faculties of Mechanical Engineering (Aachen Steelers), Electrical Engineering (ET Lions) and Medicine (Medical Strikers) compete against each other, each with a student team for men, women and professors. In addition to setting up the teams, the student councils are also responsible for the cheerleading groups, which, however, do not correspond to classic cheerleading in all student councils .

The tournament takes place every year on the first Thursday after Nikolaus in the Tivoli ice rink and inspires 2500 to 3000 spectators. Thanks to its long tradition, it has established itself as a well-known event in the Aachen region. Traditionally, the unicup begins with a game played by the Aachen Emperors against a visiting team from another university.

After the tournament, the teams as well as the cheerleaders and loyal fans meet at a big party to celebrate their team's victory or to forget their defeats.

With its victory in 2010, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering won the Unicup for four years in a row. In 2011 the Unicup went back to the Faculty of Medicine for the first time in four years, which last won it in 2006. After two successive victories by the Medical Strikers, the ThyssenKrupp Trophy went back to the Aachen Steelers in 2013. Most recently, on December 11, 2014, the ThyssenKrupp Trophy was handed over to the medical student body, which was just able to prevail against the mechanical engineering student body.

In addition to the ThyssenKrupp Trophy, the FUFAH honorary award for the best cheerleading show will also be awarded. In addition to ability, this price also takes into account other criteria, such as B. Fairness. In 2006 the FUFAH honorary award went to the Faculty of Medicine. In 2007 and 2008 to the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, in 2009 to the cheerleaders of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and again to the Faculty of Medicine in 2010. After a three-year break, the cheerleaders of the mechanical engineering faculty were again awarded the FUFAH honorary award in 2011 and 2012. In 2013 the FUFAH honorary award went to the Faculty of Medicine, whose students presented a cheerleading show based roughly on the theme of "circus". In 2014 the FUFAH honorary award went to the mechanical engineering department. In December 2015, the mechanical engineering department managed to win both first place in the ice hockey tournament and the cheerleading honorary award. In 2016, the student body for mechanical engineering won the trophy for the seventh time. After 2009, the FUFAH honorary cheerleading award went to the Electrical Engineering Department for the second time, in whose acrobatic show program the RWTH Rector Ernst Schmachtenberg took an active part this year . In 2017, for the first time since 2006, the Aachen Steelers could neither win the Unicup nor the FUFAH honorary award. The medical student council won ice hockey and the ET Lions cheerleading team successfully defended the FUFAH honorary award from the previous year.

history

In 1988 the Unicup was brought into being by the then director of the pathology institute, Christian Mittermayer. In the meantime, the number of viewers has risen from initially around 10 to 3000. Since the year of university sports in North Rhine-Westphalia , 2003 , the Unicup has started with an opening game between two university sports teams.

On December 6, 2012, the Unicup celebrated its 25th anniversary. The Turkish ice hockey team was invited by the METU Ankara as a visiting team . The Aachen Emperors won 11: 1.
