Walt Anderson (born 1952 in DeFuniak Springs , Florida ) is an American dentist and American football referee in the National Football League . He has been a referee since the 1996 NFL season . First he was a linesman, since the 2003 NFL season he has been the main referee with the shirt number 66. He was one of the linesmen of the Super Bowl XXXV . This was played on January 28, 2001 at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa . On February 6, 2011, he was the chief referee of the Super Bowl XLV at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington .

Personal

Walt Anderson was born in DeFuniak Springs in 1952. He grew up in Channelview where his father was a high school football coach. He played as a quarterback in his father's team . He received his bachelor's degree from Sam Houston State University in 1974 . During his tenure at Sam Houston, he was quarterback twice All-American . In 1978 he received his PhD from the University of Texas at Austin . He then worked as a dentist . When he was appointed Chief Referee in the NFL in 2003, he closed his practice in Sugar Land to devote himself entirely to the NFL. On April 26, 2006, he was appointed Referee Coordinator for the Big 12 Conference .

He is married to Afshan. He has a child with her. Both have 2 children each from previous marriages. You live in Sugar Land.

Career as a referee

After his playing career, he decided to stay true to football. He decided to pursue the referee career. He has directed junior high and high school games and some university team games, among others . This included games from the Lone Star Conference , the Southland Conference and the Southwest Athletic Conference . He was eventually discovered by NFL scouts and appointed to referee in the NFL.

In his first seasons he was used as a linesman. In 2003, he finally became chief referee. At Super Bowl XXXV he was involved as a line judge under chief referee Gerald Austin . He described this as the most memorable game of his career to date.

He was named Chief Referee for the Super Bowl XLV by the NFL .
