The Monument to the Revolution of the Residents of Moslavina ( Serbo-Croatian Spomenik Revolucije Naroda Moslavine ) is a monument in Podgarić , Croatia . The monument designed by Dušan Džamonja was built from 1965 to 1967. It commemorates the resistance of the inhabitants of the Moslavina region against the fascist Ustasha .

Historical background

Croatia was annexed by the Wehrmacht in April 1941 during the Balkan campaign and the Independent State of Croatia was constituted as a fascist one-party dictatorship. The Axis powers were supported by the Croatian terrorist organization Ustascha, who wanted an ethnically "pure" Croatian state. Many residents of the Moslavina region, including mainly Serbs , Jews , Roma and also Croats , resisted the repression and violence of the Wehrmacht and the Ustaše. On June 22, 1941, the first Yugoslav partisan army was founded in Sisak . Shortly thereafter, partisan armies formed across the region.

From the winter of 1941 the region around Podgarić became one of the most important centers of the partisan revolution. In the forest near Podgarić there were two partisan hospitals, which mainly served the approximately 6,000 soldiers of the 10th Zagreb Partisan Corps. The hospitals were operated from January 27, 1942. The hospital not only served to care for the wounded, but strategic planning was also carried out.

monument

Due to the importance of Podgarić, regional politicians and veteran groups campaigned for the construction of a monument in the 1960s. The Yugoslav sculptor Dušan Džamonja won the competition. He was supported by the painter and architect Vladimir Veličković for the erection of the monument . The monument was officially inaugurated by Josip Tito on September 7, 1967 after two years of construction .

The monument is a reinforced concrete wing about 10 meters high and 20 meters wide with decorative square aluminum elements in the middle that form a circle. On the way to the memorial there is a mass grave on which about 900 partisans are buried who died of their injuries in the hospitals. This is marked by a concrete passage. A small artistic lake was created at the foot of the complex by building a small dam on the Kamenjače River .

reception

The central aluminum ornament is very similar to a metal relief also created in 1967 by Dušan Džamonja with the title The Sun at the Belgrade Youth Center from 1964 by the architect Momcilo Belobrk . It is not clear whether Džamonja planned both at the same time or whether one is the forerunner of the other.

The memorial was the subject of a Yugoslav postage stamp.
