Samuel Richard "Sam" Darnold (* 5. June 1997 in Dana Point , California ) is an American American football player at the position of quarterback . He played college football for the University of Southern California and has been with the New York Jets in the National Football League (NFL) since 2018 , having been selected as the third player in the 2018 NFL Draft .

Early years

Darnold attended San Clemente High in San Clemente , where he successfully played basketball in addition to football . He originally played as a wide receiver and linebacker . After stepping in as a quarterback due to an injury, he later moved to this position.

college

From 2016 to 2017 Darnold played football in college . He attended the University of Southern California , where he played for the USC Trojans in the NCAA Division I FBS. With the Trojans he was able to win the Rose Bowl 2017 with 52:49 against the Penn State Nittany Lions and was voted Most Valuable Player of the Offense.

In total, he came to 549 successful passes in 846 pass attempts and 7,229 yards and 57 thrown touchdowns in the two years .

NFL

Darnold was selected as the third player overall and second quarterback by the New York Jets in the 2018 NFL Draft , with most experts reckoning he would be selected first.

On August 29, 2018, he was named by the Jets as starting quarterback, making him the youngest starting quarterback before Drew Bledsoe in a team's first game of the season and the second-youngest starting quarterback of the NFL ever after Tommy Maddox since 1970. In the preseason he had thrown in three games with two touchdowns and one interception 244 yards and prevailed against Josh McCown and Teddy Bridgewater , who was given a third round pick to the New Orleans Saints .

On his NFL debut against the Detroit Lions , he threw an interception on his very first pass that resulted in a touchdown for the Lions. He then made 80 percent of the passes, threw two touchdowns at 198 yards and led the Jets to an ultimately safe 48:17 victory. After suffering a foot injury in Week 9, McCown replaced him for several weeks. In his 14th week comeback against the Buffalo Bills , he led the Jets to a 27:23 win, ending a six-game losing streak.

After the first game of the 2019 season, Darnold fell ill with Pfeiffer glandular fever and was therefore out for several weeks. In his comeback in week 6 against the Dallas Cowboys , he led the previously winless Jets to their surprising first win of the season, throwing two touchdowns and one interception. He was named AFC Offensive Player of the Week for his performance in the game . In the next game against the New England Patriots , however, Darnold had a pitch-black day. In the 0:33 defeat, he threw four interceptions and lost a fumble .
