Minkah Fitzpatrick Jr. (* 17th November 1996 in Old Bridge Township , New Jersey ) is an American American football player at the position of the safeties . He played college football for Alabama and was selected in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins . He has been with the Pittsburgh Steelers in the National Football League (NFL) since 2019 .

college

Fitzpatrick was born in 1996 in Old Bridge Township , New Jersey and attended St. Peter's Preparatory School in Jersey City . In addition to his current position as safety, he also played as cornerback , running back and wide receiver at high school . He then played college football from 2015 to 2017 . He attended the University of Alabama and played for the Alabama Crimson Tide in the NCAA Division I FBS. He started 38 games and won the College Football Playoff National Championship twice with Alabama (2015, 2017) . In 2017 he won the Chuck Bednarik Award , which recognizes the best defensive player in college football. After his third year, Fitzpatrick announced that he would be giving up his senior year of college and enrolling in the 2018 NFL Draft .

In total, he came to 171 tackles in three seasons for Alabama, including 16.5 for loss of space, 5 sacks, 24 defended passes, nine interceptions and two forced fumbles.

NFL

Fitzpatrick was selected 11th in the 2018 NFL Draft and the first player in his position by the Miami Dolphins . There he signed a four-year contract for $ 16.4 million.

In the third game of the 2018 season , Fitzpatrick started against the Oakland Raiders for the first time, and the following week he caught his first interception in the NFL against the New England Patriots with a pass from Tom Brady . In the game against the Minnesota Vikings in week 15, he was able to carry his second interception back to a touchdown in the opposing end zone.

After the 2nd matchday of the 2019 season , the Dolphins gave the Pittsburgh Steelers a first-round pick in the 2020 draft as part of the reorganization of their team Fitzpatrick , and the two franchises also exchanged a few late-round picks. With the change to the Steelers there was a significant increase in performance at Fitzpatrick, with him the Steelers defense developed into one of the best in the league. On December 17, 2019, Fitzpatrick was nominated for the Pro Bowl for the first time .
