Kliff Timothy Kingsbury (born August 9, 1979 in San Antonio , Texas ) is a former American football player and current coach. He is currently the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals in the NFL . He had previously been the head coach at Texas Tech University . As a player, however, he only came to one use in the NFL, nonetheless he won a Super Bowl .

Career

Career as a player

After his high school Kingsbury started in 1998 for the Texas Tech University as a quarterback to play. In 2002 he was able to lead the team to 9 wins with 5 losses and one win in the Florida Citrus Bowl. He himself received the Sammy Baugh Trophy for best college passer and was voted Offensive Player of the Year by the Associated Press .

After these performances, he was selected in the 2003 NFL Draft in 201st place by the New England Patriots . However, he was not used in the season due to an injury, the Patriots won the Super Bowl that year . This was followed by short stints at the New Orleans Saints , the Denver Broncos and the New York Jets , for which he made his only NFL game. In 2006 he played for the Cologne Centurions in the NFL Europe . Then he was still in the squad of the Buffalo Bills , before moving to the CFL in 2007 . There he was first in the squad of the Montréal Alouettes and later the Winnipeg Blue Bombers . However, he was not used and then ended his active career.

Career as a coach

After retiring, initially assistant coach at the University of Houston , in 2010 he was promoted to co- offensive coordinator alongside Jason Phillips. After a very good season he followed head coach Kevin Sumlin as offensive coordinator at Texas A&M University . After just one season, he was named head coach of his old university, Texas Tech University, to succeed Tommy Tuberville . In his first season he was able to win the first seven games and the Holiday Bowl at the end of the season. In the following years, however, could not build on these successes, he was a total of 75 games, of which 35 were won and 40 were lost. Baker Mayfield and Patrick Mahomes played under him during his time at Texas Tech University .

After the 2018 season, it became clear that Kingsbury was not going to coach Texas Tech University for another season. He originally signed a contract with the University of Southern California as their new offensive coordinator, but on January 8, 2019, he was introduced as the new head coach of the Arizona Cardinals . However, the Cardinals finished his first season as the last of the NFC West with 5 wins, 10 losses and one draw.
