Thomas "Tommy" Hawley Tuberville (* 18th September 1954 in Camden , Arkansas ) is a former American American football coach and politicians. Tuberville worked as head coach in the college sector for many years for Auburn University .

Tuberville is running for an Alabama Senate seat in the 2020 United States Senate election .

biography

Tommy Tuberville was born in Camden, Arkansas, to Charles and Olive Tuberville. He graduated from Harmony Grove High School in Camden in 1972. He then attended Southern Arkansas University , where he played American football and golf . He received a BS degree in sports from SAU in 1976.

Tuberville got his first job as head coach of a college football team in 1994 at the University of Mississippi . In 1998 he moved to Auburn University , although he had previously denied such ambitions. In 2010 Tuberville went to Texas Tech University . At the end of 2012 he began an engagement at the University of Cincinnati . In December 2016, he ended his career as a football coach.

In April 2019, Tuberville moved into politics, announcing that it would run for the Republican Party for the Senate seat in Alabama , thereby challenging incumbent Democratic Senator Doug Jones . His candidacy is supported by Sean Spicer , former White House press secretary . On March 3, 2020, Tuberville won 33.4% in the Republican primary, taking first place. On March 31, he was to run a runoff against runner-up Jeff Sessions , who held the Senate seat from 1997 to 2017. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States , the runoff election was postponed to July 17, which he won.
