Younghoe Koo (Korean: 구영회 , born August 3, 1994 in Seoul , South Korea ) is a South Korean American football player on the position of the kicker . He played college football for Georgia Southern University and has been with the Atlanta Falcons in the National Football League (NFL) since 2019 .

Early years

Koo was born in the South Korean capital Seoul . He emigrated to the United States with his mother . He went to high school in Ridgewood , New Jersey . He then attended Georgia Southern University for four years .

NFL and AAF

Los Angeles Chargers

After the 2017 NFL draft , Koo signed a deal with the Los Angeles Chargers . He prevailed against Josh Lambo and was named the team's starting kicker. In his first NFL game against the Denver Broncos , his field goal attempt was blocked at 21:24 . A week later he missed it with a field goal against the Miami Dolphins at 17:19 to decide the game for the Chargers. After the fourth day of the season he was released.

Atlanta Legends

On January 14, 2019, Koo signed a contract with the Atlanta Legends in the Alliance of American Football (AAF). He scored 14 of 14 field goals for the Legends before the league went bankrupt and was disbanded.

New England Patriots

On October 4, 2019 Koo was in the practice squad of the New England Patriots recorded after the kicker to Stephen Gostkowski had suffered an injury and on the Injured Reserve List has been set. He was released on October 15th.

Atlanta Falcons

On October 29, 2019, Koo signed a contract with the Atlanta Falcons after the Falcons fired their long-term kicker Matt Bryant . In his first game for the Falcons, he scored four out of four field goals and two out of two extra points. For his achievements he was named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week . He got two successful onside kicks on matchday 13 . The game against the New Orleans Saints was still lost with 26:18. A week later, he scored four of four field goals against the Carolina Panthers and recorded a fumble . For this achievement, too, he was named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week .

Koo played for the Falcons in eight games in 2019, hit 23 of 26 field goal attempts (88%) and scored 15 of 16 extra points. After the season, the Falcons extended his contract for a year.
