Vontaze Burfict DeLeon Jr. (* 24. September 1990 in Los Angeles , California ) is an American American football poker players on the position of the linebackers . He played college football for Arizona State University . Burfict was most recently under contract with the Oakland Raiders in the National Football League (NFL) and is currently a free agent. From 2012 to 2018 he played for the Cincinnati Bengals .

college

Burfict attended Centennial High School in Corona , California , and was considered the best player in high school in California , alongside Matt Barkley . 247Sports rated him as the country's eleven best player in his year. Burfict initially wanted to play for the University of Southern California in college , but chose Arizona State University instead on National Signing Day .

After his freshman year of college for the Arizona State Sun Devils , Burfict was named Defensive Freshman of the Year in the Pacific-12 Conference . In his second year he was able to improve and was named Defensive MVP of the Pac-10. He forced two fumbles and led his team with 90 tackles , 8.5 of them for loss of space. After a less convincing third year, Burfict announced in January 2012 that he would be giving up his senior year of college and signing up for the NFL Draft .

NFL

Burfict was not selected by any team in the 2012 NFL Draft, attributed to his numerous college fouls and poor performance at the NFL Combine . The Cincinnati Bengals then signed Burfict as a free agent.

From the third day of his rookie season, Burfict started as a starter due to an injury-related loss. He recorded 127 tackles. In the following season he was able to increase to 171 tackles, which he led the NFL in this statistic. He was nominated for the Pro Bowl and received a four-year contract extension for $ 20 million in August 2013. At the same time, Burfict was punished several times in 2013 for playing unfairly or too hard and had to pay three fines totaling 58,875 dollars.

In the 2014 season Burfict denied only five games. After missing two games due to a concussion earlier in the season, a knee injury ended his season prematurely. In the game against division rivals Pittsburgh Steelers in week 14 of the 2015 season , Burfict was fined $ 69,454 by the NFL for three illegal tackles. Burfict was suspended for the first three games of the 2016 season because of another offense in the last game of the regular season and an illegal tackle against Antonio Brown in the wildcard round of the play-offs - again against the Pittsburgh Steelers .

After another violation in a preseason game in 2017, Burfict was suspended for the first five games of the regular season, which was later reduced to three games. Burfict's 2018 season also began with a suspension that lasted four games due to violation of NFL guidelines on performance-enhancing substances . After the season, he was released by the Bengals on March 18, 2019 after seven years. For the Bengals, Burfict had scored over 100 tackles in three seasons. The day after he was released, the Oakland Raiders signed him.

Burfict was named one of the team captains of the Raiders. After a forbidden helmet-to-helmet hit in the fourth game of the season, he was suspended until the end of the season, which is the longest suspension to date for an offense on the field.
