Konstantinos "Kostas" Arvanitis ( Greek Κωνσταντίνος Αρβανίτης , born June 9, 1964 in Athens ) is a Greek journalist and politician from SYRIZA . Since the European elections in 2019 he has been a member of the European Parliament as part of the GUE / NGL group .

Life

Arvanitis was born on June 9, 1964 in the Sepolia district of Athens .

Professional career

Since 1987 Arvanitis has worked as a journalist, including for magazines such as Odigitis (Οδηγητής), Ethnos (Έθνος), Eikones (Εικόνες). Later he was editor-in-chief of the AKIMME news agency (ΑΚΗΜΜΕ). He also worked for various radio stations. Arvanitis later began working as a presenter for the public broadcaster ERT . After Arvanitis reported in his morning program on ERT1 in October 2012 about police violence against demonstrators during the Greek economic crisis and criticized the then Interior Minister Nikos Dendias , his program was canceled on the instructions of the government and Arvanitis terminated. Numerous colleagues from the station went on strike. From 2013 to 2016 he headed the radio station Sto Kokkino (Στο Κόκκινο). He then worked for the media group 24MEDIA, but left after differences of opinion and returned to the public broadcaster ERT.

Aside from his journalistic career, Arvanitis also worked as a football coach for various clubs, including Afofos, Atlas, Longlived, etc. From June to December 2018 he was honorary deputy chairman of the Apollon Smyrnis football club .

Political career

Until 1991 Arvanitis was active for the communist youth and the communist party .

In spring 2019, Arvanitis, an avowed Syriza member, was nominated by the party for the 2019 European elections. His party won 23.7 percent in the elections, 6 of the 21 Greek seats. Arvanitis won a mandate and joined the Confederal Group of the European United Left / Nordic Green Left together with his party colleagues . For the group, Arvanitis is a member of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs and an alternate member of the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs .
