Joseph Sill "Joe" Clark (born November 30, 1861 in Germantown , Pennsylvania , † April 14, 1956 ) was an American tennis player .

biography

Clark graduated from Harvard University . In the Intercollegiate Championship in 1883 he beat his fellow student and American master Richard Sears as Harvard champion . He won the doubles competition together with Malcolm Chace .

In 1885, Clark and Richard Sears won the American Tennis Championships in doubles against Henry Slocum and Wallace P. Knapp in three sets 6: 3, 6: 0 and 6: 2. In the individual he made it into the semi-finals between 1885 and 1887.

From 1889 to 1891, Clark was President of the United States Lawn Tennis Association (USLTA).

With his wife Kate Richardson Avery (born July 10, 1868) he had two children, Joseph Sill II (born October 21, 1901) and Avery Borodell (born March 2, 1904).

In 1955, Clark was inducted into the newly established International Tennis Hall of Fame . His older brother Clarence Clark was also inducted in 1983.
