Sam Giammalva (born August 1, 1934 in Houston , Texas ) is a retired American tennis player .

Life

Giammalva played for the University of Texas at Austin , for which he twice reached the finals of the NCAA championships. Between 1956 and 1958 he won the individual title of the Southwest Conference three times in a row .

His best individual result in a Grand Slam tournament was reaching the quarter-finals at the US Open , in the doubles competition he was able to reach the third round of the US Open twice, most recently in 1972 at the age of 38. He was twice in the finals of the Cincinnati Masters ; In 1954 he was defeated by Straight Clark and in 1958 by Bernard Bartzen .

Giammalva played five singles and five doubles games for the US Davis Cup team between 1956 and 1958 . His individual balance was 4: 1, in doubles it was 3: 2. His only single defeat brought him the nine-time Grand Slam winner Ken Rosewall , to whom he was defeated in four sets.

Giammalva worked as a trainer at Rice University between 1959 and 1972 . During this time, the team got ten titles in the Southwest Conference. His two sons Tony Giammalva and Sammy Giammalva were successful tennis professionals.
