Dick Savitt

Richard "Dick" Savitt (born March 4, 1927 in Bayonne , New Jersey ) is a retired American tennis player .

In 1951, Savitt won both the Australian Open and Wimbledon and finished the year in second place in the world. 1951 was also the only year in which he competed in the Davis Cup for the USA. After his victory at the US National Indoor Singles Championships in 1952, he ended his sporting career. In 1956 he briefly returned to the tennis scene. In 1961 he took part in the 6th Maccabiade and won gold both in singles and, together with Mike Franks , in doubles.

Savitt was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1976 . In 1979 he was inducted into the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame .
