Mank is a film drama by David Fincher , which during the year 2020 from Netflix to be published. The director's biopic is dedicated to the true story of Hollywood screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz , played by Gary Oldman , and his dispute with director Orson Welles over the screenplay for Citizen Kane , a 1941 film. The screenplay was written by Jack Fincher , the director's late father.

The screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz

The American Herman J. Mankiewicz was a very influential figure in the film industry, worked on the scripts of dozens of films and was often asked to revise the scripts of other authors. He has worked on some of the greatest films of his day, including The Pride of St. Louis , Pride of the Yankees , Dinner at Eight, and The Wizard of Oz , although he did not receive any screenwriting credits for the latter work. He is said to have been involved in over 25 film projects between 1929 and 1935.

Mankiewicz also co-wrote the original script for Citizen Kane . In early 1940, Mankiewicz and John Houseman moved to the North Verde Ranch on the Mojave River in Victorville , California , which later became the Kemper Campbell Ranch. Here they worked in seclusion for 12 weeks on the first two drafts of the script. There was a big argument between him and Orson Welles over the credits. Finally, the Screen Writers Guild shared credits with Mankiewicz's name coming first. For his work, Mankiewicz was awarded an Oscar together with Welles.

Directed by David Fincher . It is his first film since Gone Girl from 2014. The script was written by Jack Fincher , the director's father, who died in April 2003.

In July 2019, it was announced that Gary Oldman would take over the title role from Herman J. Mankiewicz . It is his first leading role since The Darkest Hour , for which he was awarded an Oscar for best actor. In mid-October 2019, Fincher announced the further line-up. Amanda Seyfried plays Marion Davies , who embodied the protagonist's affair in Citizen Kane . Lily Collins plays Rita Alexander and Tuppence Middleton took on the role of Sara Mankiewicz. Tom Pelphrey plays Joseph L. Mankiewicz , the older brother of the screenwriter, Orson Welles is played by Tom Burke and the film producer Irving Thalberg is played by Ferdinand Kingsley . Actress Leven Rambin took on the role of Eve.

Filming

The North Verde Ranch, later the Kemper Campbell Ranch

Filming started in November 2019. In December 2019, the majority of the shooting took place at the Kemper Campbell Ranch in the Californian city of Victorville . The ranch was previously called North Verde Ranch, to which Mankiewicz had retired 80 years earlier with John Houseman. Erik Messerschmidt acted as cameraman and the Oscar winner Kirk Baxter as film editor .

Film music and publication

The score was composed by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross , with whom Fincher also worked on Gone Girl .

Before the coronavirus pandemic began, it was suspected that Netflix would release the film in the summer or fall of 2020.
