action
The drummer Ruben and his girlfriend Lou form a duo called Blackgammon. You travel from gig to gig in a motorhome. Ruben was still a junkie until four years ago. While the two are waiting to be able to do a soundcheck in a club, Ruben suddenly loses his hearing. Doctors tell him that it is imperative that he avoid all loud noises in his everyday life. Because Ruben still wants to play the drums loudly at the gigs as before, Lou ends her tour.
During a visit to a group of deaf people, Ruben is convinced by the group leader, Joe, that it is best for him if he stays there indefinitely and has no contact with the outside world. In the group he learns to deal with a completely new situation. Forced to go back to school, he is learning sign language with deaf elementary school children in a class taught by Diane. Even if Ruben can now communicate with the other members of the group without any problems, he quarrels with himself whether he can really leave his old life behind. In Ruben, the decision matures to sell everything he has and get a cochlear implant .
production
Staff, film music and sound design
Directed by Darius Marder , he wrote the script together with his brother Abraham Marder . Together with Nicolas Becker, he was also responsible for the film music. Becker was also responsible for the sound editing. The Hollywood Reporter's John DeFore explains that the accomplished sound designer shows the audience what Ruben is hearing: "Voices and noises are muffled as if they were underwater and become less and less clear when Ruben realizes that this is not a passing phenomenon." When Ruben finally gets his cochlear implant , the innovative use of sound is increased dramatically, says Owen Gleiberman of Variety : "We hear what Ruben hears, and that is more than nothing, but it is echo-like, metallic and painfully flawed. "
The film band Blackgammon is based on the direction and composition of the real band called Jucifer , a sludge duo from Georgia, which is known for the high volume of their concerts and touring for years. The members had appeared in an unreleased film called Metalhead by Derek Cianfrance . Marder has subtitled the entire film so that it can be experienced by both hearing and deaf people.

British actor Riz Ahmed took on the role of drummer Ruben, Olivia Cooke that of his girlfriend and bandmate Lou. French actor Mathieu Amalric plays her father Richard Berger, Lauren Ridloff Rubens plays deaf language teacher Diane and Paul Raci plays Vietnam veteran Joe, who lost his hearing during the war.
In preparation for his role, Ahmed took drum lessons for six months. He also learned sign language .

Age ratings and reviews

In the USA, the film received an R rating from the MPAA , which corresponds to a rating of 17 and over.
The film was rated positively by 90 percent of all Rotten Tomatoes critics and received 8.2 out of a possible 10 points (as of September 22, 2019). The film's special sound design was repeatedly highlighted by film critics .
Norman Wilner from Now Toronto writes that the offensive, almost experimental sound design contributes significantly to being able to empathize with Ruben.
Eric Kohn of IndieWire even speaks of the best use of sound design in the recent past, as Darius Marder immerses the viewer in the confines of Rubens' deteriorating relationship with the world around him and lets the wreckage be searched to construct a new one. Riz Ahmed's brilliant performance takes place in a complex soundscape in which complete silence also resonates, explains Kohn, which makes Marder's debut film a mesmerizing experience.
