Lauren Ridloff , née Teruel, (born April 6, 1978 in Chicago , Illinois ) is a Deaf American actress and former teacher . She is best known as the former Miss Deaf America ('Taube Miss America') and for her role as "Sarah Norman" in the play Children of a Lesser God , in which she played on Broadway in 2018 . Since 2018 she has also played the role of the deaf "Connie" in the television series The Walking Dead .

life and career

Education and family

Lauren Ridloff was born Lauren Teruel in Chicago to a Mexican-American father and an African-American mother. Her parents first enrolled her at the Catholic Holy Trinity School, later she attended the Model Secondary School for the Deaf in Kendall Green , where she decided to only communicate in sign language . She moved to the West Coast to the California State University, Northridge to visit, where she received her degree in English and creative writing in the 2000th She was working at California State University's National Center on Deafness (NCOD) when she was named Miss Deaf America in 2000. After college and her time as Miss Deaf America, she moved to New York City in 2007 in hopes of becoming a children's author and studied education at Hunter College . After that, she taught in a kindergarten for several years.

She has been married to Douglas Ridloff, who is also deaf, since 2006 and has two deaf children with him. She lives with her family in the Brooklyn borough of New York .

Career as an actress

In 2011 Lauren Ridloff starred in the film If You Could Hear My Own Tune and in 2017 she got a small role each in the films Wonderstruck by Todd Haynes and Sign Gene . Shortly thereafter, she was teaching director Kenny Leon in American Sign Language (ASL). She taught him the basics of sign language and explained the deaf community to him. Leon was working on a revision of the play Children of a Lesser God , written in 1979 by Mark Medoff . He had already signed the male lead actor Joshua Jackson , a female lead was still missing and he asked Ridloff if she wanted to take on this role. In the role of "Sarah Norman," she played a woman who decided not to talk anymore, and she also taught Jackson how to communicate with her in ASL.

For her role, Lauren Ridloff was nominated for several awards in 2018, including the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play, as well as the Drama League Award and the Outer Critics Circle Award for her acting performance; she won the Theater World Award that same year.

In 2018 she took on the role of the deaf "Conny" in the television series The Walking Dead , which established itself as a permanent role in seasons 9 and 10. In 2019 she played a deaf language teacher in the film Sound of Metal about a heavy metal drummer who has lost his hearing, as well as in an episode of the television series New Amsterdam . She also took on the role of a female, deaf version of "Makkari" in the Marvel film The Eternals , which will be released in November 2020.
