Promising Young Woman is a thriller by Emerald Fennell that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2020 .

Everyone believed Cassie was a promising young woman and a medical student until one day an incident unbalanced their lives. A suicide in her circle of friends was the trigger.
She leads a quiet life as a barista and has lived in her parents' house since dropping out of medical school. At night, however, Cassie leads a double life and senses the opportunity to avenge the injustice she has suffered in her past. Their victims are men who happen to cross their path and try to take advantage of women.
When she reunites with Ryan, a former classmate, she learns new details about her best friend's death, which makes her even angrier.

The screenplay by Emerald Fennell , who also directed, was blacklisted for Hollywood's Best Unfilmed Ideas in 2018 . After a short film, the film marks the directorial debut of the Englishwoman Fennell, who became known as an actress (including in Call the Midwife and The Crown ) and as the showrunner in the series Killing Eve .
Carey Mulligan stars as Cassie. Laverne Cox plays Cassie's boss Gail, Bo Burnham plays her former classmate Ryan. Other roles were cast with Alison Brie , Connie Britton , Adam Brody and Jennifer Coolidge . The shooting took place in Los Angeles.
The score was composed by Anthony B. Willis . The soundtrack album, which comprises a total of 16 pieces of music, including two songs by CYN, new songs by DeathbyRomy and FLETCHER, pre-released pieces by Muna and Blessus, but also covers by Carmen DeLeon of the song He Hit Me (And It Felt Like A Kiss) by The Crystals and DeathbyRomy of the song It's Raining Men by the Weather Girls, is to be released on April 3, 2020 by Capitol Records as a download and on April 17, 2020 on CD.
The first trailer was presented in December 2019. The film was first shown on January 26, 2020 at the Sundance Film Festival . It was due to be released in US cinemas on April 17, 2020 as distribution by Focus Features . The planned start in Germany on May 7, 2020, both start dates have been postponed indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic.
