Kelly Adam Asbury (born January 15, 1960 in Beaumont , Texas , † June 26, 2020 in Encino , California ) was an American animator , film director and screenwriter .

Life

Because of his early enthusiasm for drawing, Asbury wrote a letter to Disney at the age of 17 asking if he could work on future productions. To his own surprise, he received a reply from the production manager to try a trainee program. And so, after a stopover at Lamar University , Asbury attended the California Institute of the Arts from 1978 to 1980 . There he studied at the same time as Rob Minkoff , Chris Sanders , Kirk Wise and Gary Trousdale. After a short stop as a storyboard artist at The Littles , his career at Disney began working on Taran and the Magic Cauldron . He stayed at Disney until 1995 with his last project, Toy Story , and worked on films such as Ariel, the Mermaid , Beauty and the Beast and Nightmare Before Christmas . He then switched to Dreamworks and was allowed to direct an animated film for the first time with Spirit - The Wild Mustang . For Shrek 2 - The Daredevil Hero Returns and Shrek the Third was Asbury's first voice actor. In 2011 Gnomeo and Juliet came to the cinemas. Back in January 2006, producer Baker Bloodworth contacted him and offered to direct Gnomeo and Julia. Asbury then worked for years with singer Elton John and British actors such as Patrick Stewart and Michael Caine on this project.

Since he was fascinated by the art of ventriloquism since childhood, he wrote a book about five famous ventriloquists of the 20th century. He tried to get the book published for over 10 years before he found a publisher in Angel City Press who published the book Dummy Days in 2003.

Asbury was married to the illustrator Loretta Weeks from November 9, 1990 to March 2006. Both met during the production of Arielle the Mermaid .

He died in June 2020 at the age of 60 years of a cancer .
