The Trial of the Chicago 7 is a thriller by Aaron Sorkin , who at the October 16, 2020 Netflix to appear. The film tells about the Chicago Seven , against whom a conspiracy and incitement trial was brought in 1969.

After seven men took part in protests against the Vietnam War at the Chicago Democratic National Convention in 1968 , they were brought to justice the following year. The federal government accuses the seven defendants of conspiracy and riot.

Development and staff

Aaron Sorkin , who directed it, had written the script for the Chicago Seven trial back in 2007 . Originally, Steven Spielberg wanted to direct. After a strike by the Writers Guild of America , which began in November 2007 and lasted 100 days, the project was suspended. In October 2018, Sorkin was announced as the new director. In December 2018, the film was suspended again for budget reasons until Paramount Pictures finally acquired the distribution rights.

The roles of the Chicago Seven star include Sacha Baron Cohen as Abbie Hoffman , Eddie Redmayne as Tom Hayden , Alex Sharp as Rennie Davis , Jeremy Strong as Jerry Rubin , Noah Robbins as Lee Weiner , Daniel Flaherty as John Froines and John Carroll Lynch as David Dellinger . Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Kelvin Harrison Jr. play US civil rights activists and co-founders and activists of the Black Panther Party, Fred Hampton and Bobby Seale, respectively . Mark Rylance took on the role of William Kunstler , who was the best-known civil rights attorney in the United States during the 1960s and 1970s. Michael Keaton plays Ramsey Clark , who was the 66th Attorney General under President Lyndon B. Johnson from 1967 to 1969 . William Hurt plays his successor John N. Mitchell , who was Richard Nixon's campaign manager. Leonard Weinglass , played by Ben Shenkman , was an American criminal and constitutional lawyer. Also starring are Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Richard Schultz, Max Adler as Stan Wojohowski and Wayne Duvall as Detective Paul DeLuca to see.

The cameraman was Phedon Papamichael , who received an Oscar nomination for Nebraska and who most recently worked with James Mangold on the film Le Mans 66 - Against Any Chance .

The film music is composed by Daniel Pemberton .

The film was originally scheduled to hit select US theaters on September 25, 2020 and nationwide on October 16, 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the film rights to Netflix were sold for $ 56 million. Instead of in the cinema, the film is to be released on October 16, 2020 and thus before the presidential election in the United States in November 2020 on the streaming provider.
