Bobby Seale (2006)

Bobby Seale (born October 22, 1936 in Dallas ) is an American civil rights activist and co-founder of the Black Panther Party . Today he works as a lecturer, presenter and television chef . He is married with two children and lives in Philadelphia .

Life

At the age of seven, Seale and his family moved from Texas to California , where he worked as a mechanic for the US Air Force after high school . Seale later enrolled at Merritt College to specialize in design .

Black Panther Self Defense Party

On October 15, 1966 Seale founded with Huey P. Newton in Oakland in the wake of the assassination of Malcolm X , the African American civil rights organization the Black Panther Party For Self Defense . Newton named himself Secretary of Defense and Seale became the party chairman . In contrast to the non-violent civil rights movement under Martin Luther King and the religious black nationalist Nation of Islam , Seale saw the Black Panther Party (BPP) as an explicitly left-wing organization of African Americans and as a protection force for their communities against racist attacks by the police. Organizing free breakfasts for black students was just as much a part of the Black Panther strategy as building a large arsenal of weapons.

Seale achieved national notoriety when he and Abbie Hoffman , Jerry Rubin and five other defendants (as one of the Chicago Eight ) were on trial for conspiracy and incitement at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Because the defendants did not recognize the court, they often interrupted the session with heckling, swear words and insults. Seale later watched the trial in the courtroom handcuffed and gagged. For disobeying the court, Seale was eventually sentenced to four years in prison. The remaining defendants (now known as the "Chicago Seven") were later acquitted.

After a series of internal disputes over the basic orientation of the Black Panthers, Seale was expelled from the party in 1974.

After the Black Panthers

Today Seale works as a speaker, presenter and television chef. He is the author of numerous books on the Black Panthers as well as a popular barbecue cookbook. He is currently the chairman of REACH , an organization that helps young Americans organize local groups and actions.
