The Premonstratensian monastery was located in today's village of Witów-Kolonia about seven kilometers from Piotrków Trybunalski (Peterkau) in Masovia , now in the Łódz Voivodeship. The Church of St. Margaretha and Augustine (also the Sanctuary of the Annunciation ) has been preserved, as has a side wing of the monastery complex, which is now used as a rectory.

history

Between 1179 and 1186, Bishop Wit (Vitus) of Płock founded a monastery for Augustinian canons. Before 1206 these adopted the rules and structures of the Premonstrate Order. Probably the first canons came from Western Europe (France?). In 1240 the monastery was destroyed by the Tatar Golden Horde and almost all of the conventuals were killed.

After that the monastery was used by the Premonstratensian brothers. In the 14th and 15th centuries it had a small estate (four villages) and some privileges from tax exemption and fishing rights.

Around 1470, 1677 and 1738/45 the church and the monastery were rebuilt and rebuilt. Since the 16th century the property has increased somewhat. We have received news of minor legal disputes with the nearby Sulejów Cistercian monastery.

After the Third Partition of Poland, the monastery property was partially secularized by the new Prussian authorities in 1797. After the area passed to the Russian Empire, the monastery was closed in 1819. At that time, nine Premonstratensians still lived there.

In 1821 five of them were mentioned as priests and pastors at the parish church and probably still lived in the building. In 1860, most of the convent building was demolished and a side wing was preserved.

Documents from the Witów Monastery are now to be found in the Ossolineum Library in Wrocław and in St. Petersburg, among others.
